Ticker is a finalist in the University of Essex Innovation Awards

Over the last couple of years, our data science team has also become a research centre.

We published our first research paper with the University of Essex last year, as part of the Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) programme. The KTP connects businesses with PhD and master’s students, establishing mutually beneficial innovation projects.

We’ve now been announced as a finalist for Best Partnership SME in the University of Essex Innovation Awards, which recognise the work of all the KTPs from across the country.

Our telematics research paper

Our first paper, Telematics in Insurance: Challenges and Limitations, was an analysis of the ways in which telematics has been used in insurance so far.

The aim was to develop new ways of assessing driving behaviour, aided by the fresh thinking of Jing Qi, who chose to join the KTP programme after successfully completing her PhD at the University of Liverpool.

The paper was peer reviewed by experts from across the data science field – a real stamp of approval from people outside of commercial telematics.

The real win

As well as publishing a peer-reviewed and potentially award-winning research paper, we’ve also gained a data scientist.

Jing has now joined Ticker to continue her work at the cutting edge of telematics. It’s an amazing example of what university partnerships can achieve: advancing the data science field and embedding new experts in businesses where they can grow.

On to the next

Our first experience of the KTP programme was so valuable for everyone involved that we’ve extended our partnership. We’re now working with a master’s student on data quality for their final project.

We’re so proud to support newcomers to the data science community and invest in projects that help them research, help us stay current and, ultimately, help our customers drive more safely.
